Jonathan Mokuena, known as Jonno to most, came to the Lions after leading Griquas to a near-semifinal place in last year’s Currie Cup competition. That followed on the heels of the Vodacom Cup which they won after defeating the Blue Bulls in the final at Loftus.
He is a renowned leader, as is borne out by his captaincy of the Springbok Sevens side, the Emerging Springboks and Griquas - and he is settled in and very happy at the Lions.
“They’re a really nice bunch of guys, and we have a great management. All the newcomers have been readily accepted into the Lions fold, and all are happy.”
Asked how he felt the season would go, Jonno had an interesting answer: “It reminds be very much of the situation in Kimberley. Nobody gave us a chance, but there is a vibe, an excitement here and a determination to do well.”
The Lions will take it week by week, he echoed director of coaching Dick Muir’s words. “We obviously have goals, but right now we just want to improve every time we run onto the field.”
Mokuena had a blinder in Polokwane in the Lions’ first outing and was probably Player of the Day after shining in the earlier of two matches against the Bulls.
And where does he think the Lions’ strength lies?
Difficult to say, but I think he have a very good number of forwards here. We’ll definitely field a good pack - and from there on our backs can run.
“With players of the calibre of Carlos Spencer behind the forwards, this can become a very good side.”
Does he miss Sevens and playing on the IRB circuit?
“Yes, I do, but it was time to move to XVs and play Super 14 rugby. I’m really looking forward to the season, both from a personal and team point of view,” said the aggressive but very skilful 28-year-old loose forward.
