September 22 - For the first time in 37 years two universities competing in the Lions club league will be battling it out in the finals of the National Club Championships in Stellenbosch on Friday when the University of Johannesburg and Pukke take each other on.
UJ just managed to scrape past last years’ winners College Rovers as they beat them 27-26 in the semi-final on Wednesday while Pukke managed a fine win over hosts Maties, beating them 39-36.
Durbanite Guy Cronjé kept Rovers in the game against the Joburg Students with his reliable boot, kicking six penalties and a drop goal. And then he missed the vital conversion out of the corner to win the game for his side.
The Studens scored three tries to the single one of Rovers but was penalized silly by referee Stuart Berry (also from Durban!).
But UJ paid the price in the victory, losing flanker Biscuit van Deventer in the process with an ankle injury.
Scorers: UJ: Tries: Jacques Pretorius, Wigan Pekeur, Marnes van Huyssteen. Conversions: Luhan Steenkamp (3). Penalties: Luhan Steenkamp (2). College Rovers: Try: Chris Jordaan. Penalties: Guy Cronjé (6). Drop Goal: Cronjé.
Pukke got out of the blocks quickly in their encounter with Maties, scoring four tries in the first half and leading 39-22 quite early in the match.
Maties came back late in the game to score two tries in the dying seconds but it was too little too late.
It will be the 4th time this year that Puk and UJ meet on the rugby field with UJ taking honours three times.
Scorers:
Puk: Tries: Joe Seerane (2), Neil Jacobs, Ruan Jacobs, JC Oberholzer, Malan van der Merwe. Conversions: Jean Tiedt (3). Penalty: Tiedt.
