MTN Golden Lions lose their 'bearded' captain! |
|
October 20 - Saturday was a special day for the MTN Golden Lions Rugby side – but not only on the field. For hours after the 42-16 win over the Sharks in the Currie Cup final, they also got their ‘new’ captain.
Yes, the old Josh Strauss whose beard has inspired spectators to wear false beards to matches and who obtained near-legendary status because of his mane, is no longer. His beard has been removed – and he had very little say in its removal!
The beard was forcefully removed by teammate Wikus van Heerden as the team sat down for their post-match meal on Saturday. Van Heerden had sneaked up behind Strauss, manned with a razor and cut away a huge chunk of the captain’s facial hair. And that meant the rest had to go!
"They caught me offside," said a cleanly shaven Strauss. "The guys said they were going to do it, but after nothing happened in the dressing room I relaxed and thought they would let it go," he is quoted as saying by Sapa.
However, for his fans who revere him for his beard virtually as much as for his play, there is the good news: the clean shaven look won’t last very long.
"I've already started growing my beard for the Super Rugby season."
