April 1 - While Waterkloof gave notice that they have an outstanding team and would again be one of South Africa’s top schools with a comprehensive 28-11 win over the strong Outeniqua, Monument’s Kwaggas beat the second side from Paarl Gimnasium 20-19 in an excting match on the first day of the Monnas Genesis rugby Festival on Thursday.
The festival, hosted by Hoërskool Monument to mark the school’s 90th anniversary, continues on Saturday with the final day’s play on Monday.
Paarl Gim’s first side, however, came out tops in their match against Kemptonpark. They won 22-5 and they, too, will again be among the best schools in the country this year.
It is always difficult to judge how strong an invitation side is, but St John’s College also showed promise for the season ahead as they beat a Golden Lions XV 19-8 while Marais Viljoen were too good for Parktown Boys High, whom they beat 35-5.
St John’s play Diamantveld from Kimberley on Saturday in what should be a tough assignment. The Griquas school beat Kearsney College from KXN 24-7 in the opener on Thursday.
The depth of Paarl Gim will be severely tested on Monday when their second team plays Waterkloof.
The matches on Saturday will be played on three fields and are:
Jan Lange field:
8.30am: Kemptonpark v Parktown Boys
9.15am: Paarl Gim (first XV) v Golden Lions XV
Hans Coetzee field:
9.15am: Diamantveld v St John’s
Ras van Rooyen field:
8.30am: Kearsney College v Marais Viljoen
9.15am: Waterkloof v Paarl Gim (second XV)
10.30am: Monnas v Outeniqua.
