Lions in impressive start to Craven Week

July 12 - The Golden Lions  were impressive in their first match at the Craven Week in Kimberley on Tuesday as they ran in six tries in a 39-13 victory.

The win in itself as good, the rugby played by the Under-18 Lions was outstanding. They have issued a clear warning to the other hopefuls for the hopefuls chasing the non-official title of the best team at the Craben week withr this display, of that there can be little doubt.

Centre Burger Odendaal ran in two tries while flanker Daniel Bope, No.8 Ruan Steenkamp, scrumhalf Ruhann Kruger and winger Tshepo Mooki were the other players to score five-pointers for the Lions for whom flyhalf Jaco van der Walt kicked a penalty and three conversions.

Flanker Stephan Zaayman scored the only try for EP.His try was converted by Wayne Gardner who also added a drop goal and penalty.

In the other match between two of the top teams KwaZulu Natal secured a close but deserved 23-21 victory against DHL Western Province in their Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week clash played at the GWK Park in Kimberley.

Both teams each scored three tries in this match marred by too many handling errors. Flyhalf Robert du Preez, centre Tyler Fisher and hooker Jacques Taylor were the try-scorers for the Durban team. Western Province centre Kyle Lombard, hooker Graig Corbett and captain Sikumbuzo Notshe scored tries for the Cape team.

Winger and captain of the KwaZulu Natal team Siyabonga Tom kicked one conversion and two penalties while flyhalf Handre Pollard converted all three tries of Western Province. Pollard had the chance to snatch victory for the Cape team after they were awarded a penalty in the final minute of the match when referee Dilbert November penalised the KwaZulu Natal team for offside play.

However, his 50-meter long-range penalty kick was short which saw the Durban team win a match which they dominated in both territory and possession. Western Province struggled at the line-outs and were outplayed at the breakdown.

** The Zimbabwe team dazzled the crowd at GWK Park in Kimberley after running in nine tries before defeating the Border Central Districts team 68-3. Flankers Tapiwa Tsomondo scored a hat-trick of tries; Rock Rorke added a brace; while centre Preston Bryant, scrumhalf Robert Sargeant, centre Takudzwa Chieza and winger Tari Ndudzo were the try-scorers for the Zimbabweans. Flyhalf Luke Masasire kicked seven conversions and three penalties to end the match with a personal points haul of 23. Border CD’s only points’ in the match was scored through a penalty by Devandre Sissing.
