Defending champions Hoërskool Monument will this weekend battle it out against 15 other top Sevens sides to be crowned as the 2010 @lantic Sevens champion team and arguably the best schools Sevens side in the country. The tournament will take place on Friday and Saturday at Konka near Rustenburg.
Monnas will be up against the very best. Hoërskool Waterkloof, who won three tournaments this year, represent the Blue Bulls at Konka and must be one of the favourites. Identifying a possible winner is however no easy task.
And there will be more to play for as the hunt by national Sevens coach Paul Treu to identify talent for the 2016 Olympic Games side is now truly on.
Treu says the @lantic Series has been excellent exposure for the players of the participating teams. "Some of these boys could represent South Africa at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio Janeiro," said Treu.
According to tournament promoter, Willem Strauss the quality of Sevens and the general skills level have improved dramatically from last year and teams like Waterkloof, Tygerberg, Pionier and Merensky shone throughout the @lantic series, he says.
More than 300 schools and youth teams participated in this year's @lantic Series. This year five schools qualified for the first time to participate in the champions tournament. They are Nelspruit, Grey High (PE), HTS Middelburg, Brandwag and Sentraal.
Friday's matches kick off at 17:30. The Cup final kicks off on Saturday at 15:22.
** A mini ruby tournament with 300 participants and a netball tournament under the leadership of Carin Strauss, national Proteas coach also form part of the weekend’s proceedings.
