GLRU Sevens Player makes the Cut

Golden Lions Rugby Union Seven’s player, Gerhard Scholz has been selected for the SA University Sevens team who will be playing a warm-up tournament this weekend before they depart for the prestigious Singapore tournament. They will once again play the SA Vipers (the National Sevens team) in the warm-up tournament.

This weekend the Springbok coach Paul Treu’s national team will defend the title they won last year in the Middelburg tournament where the students will have their first and last tournament run before Singapore. The Springboks, on the other hand, last month played in - and won -  a tough tournament against some of the world’s top international sides in Namibia.

The experienced students team includes speedster Jan van der Merwe. Then with Tukkies, he was first noticed by Springbok Sevens coach Paul Treu on the North Region Sevens circuit and the national provincial championships, but then seriously injured just after he was contracted by the Sharks nearly two years ago. It will be interesting to see whether the former SA 400 metres champion can regain his form.

The Singapore tournament, says coach Freddie Grobler, will be used to identify which players are good enough for the students World Cup tournament in Portugal next year.

The SA Universities side is:
Willem van de Wall, Ockie Kruger, Gert Lubbe, Gerhard Scholz, Cameron Peverit, Zeniko Dumpadi, Dane Johnson, Branco Du Preez, Gerhard van der Merwe, Jan van der Merwe, Shaun Davids, Deon Helberg.
