The Lions 7’s team that will represent the Golden Lions Rugby Union at the Annual National 7’s Inter Provincial Competition on the 6th and 7th of November 2009 in Port Elizabeth will consist of a mixture of exciting young and experienced players.
The team was bolstered with the inclusion of Michael Killian, Ruan Cloete and Justin Wheeler (all Lions Super 14 and Lions Currie Cup players).
The experience that these players bring to the team is phenomenal, and will only benefit the team as a whole. Combine this experience with regular Lions 7’s players Derich Badenhorst, Rory van Deventer, Sean Maynier, Paul Deneys, Pieter Linde, Thys Smith, Solly Maleko and Juan Swanepoel and the exceptional talent of the school boy and SA Schools full back, Garth April, the ingredients and recipe seems to be perfect.
The Coach and Ex Zimbabian International 7’s player, Neil Nortje said, “I am very excited about this team. If the team does gel, then the sky could be the limit and we can cause a few upsets for a few of the teams and be the surprise of the Tournament”.
Unfortunately the team will not be able to use the strong runner Gerhard Scholtz for the Tournament as he is included in the SA Student’s team that will participate in a tournament in Singapoer. The team and management wish him all of the best for this step in he’s career.
The Management and Coaching Staff would like to thank the Union for the players they have made available for the Tournament and all the help we have received during 2009.
