Lions lose their cup-winning Sevens coach Jorrie |

Januarie 10 - In a real loss for especially Sevens rugby at the Golden Lions, former World Cup and Sevens Springbok Jorrie Muller has been appointed assistant coach at the Leopards.
Leon Boshoff, a former Lions and SA ‘A’ hooker who now coaches at the Leopards, has invited Muller to be his assistant after last year’s assistant coach at the Leopards, Burger van der Westhuizen, took up a position at the PUK Institute.
Muller’s record as provincial Sevens coach is outstanding. He coached the Golden Lions to the national title in 2011 after they lost the 2010 final in the Provincial Championships – the first time in many years that the Lions had progressed to the final. The Lions won the title without any contracted players against opposition who had done so.
Muller was also at the helm as the Lions won the North Regions title in 2010 and 2011 – no mean feat if it is considered that three of the four semi-finalists in the Provincial Championships came from the North Region Series in both 2010 and 2011. In fact, five of the eight quarterfinalists in 2011 were from the North Region as were both finalists.
The Sevens coach also made his mark at club level at the GLRU and was instrumental in the resurrection of the Wes Wits Rugby Club in 2010 and coached the team in 2011.
** Muller’s loss will to some extent be softened by the increased interest in and excitement for Sevens rugby among Lions club players. The annual club championships will take place on February 18 and 19 this year. The venue still has to be confirmed.
