Profile Paragraph:
Spencer has had an exciting and lucrative rugby career, playing for Auckland from 1993 to 2004, the Blues between 1996 and 2005, debuting for the All Blacks in 1994 at just 20 years of old, and moving to the United Kingdom in 2005 to expand his career. He played for the Northampton Saints until 2009 when he signed with the Lions and moved to South Africa. Spencer joined the Lions at the start of 2010 as a player, and during the Currie Cup competition he became a player/coach. He played just a few games during the competition, but his coaching abilities became apparent from the first game. The backline made a complete turnaround and became one of the best backlines in South Africa. Spencer went on to coach the Lions backline to victory in the 2011 Currie Cup where they won the competition for the first time in 12 years. Spencer’s work with the backline is admirable and he is especially admired for the work he has done with the young flyhalf Elton Jantjies at the Lions.
