Ackermann has had an extensive career as a rugby player at Lock for the Blue Bulls, Griquas, the Lions/Cats and the Sharks. Ackermann also played 15 Test matches for the Springboks. Ackermann also made a name for himself in the United Kingdom when he played for the Northampton Saints in England the Calvisano in Italy. In 2009 Ackermann assisted Lions Director of Rugby, Dick Muir in running the first Investec International Rugby Academy. Ackermann made his Super Rugby coaching debut in 2010 for the Lions, and made a huge impact on the players – both on and off the field. He coached the forwards to their first Currie Cup victory in 12 years in 2011 and has ensured that his players are well respected and admired across South Africa.
