Vodacom Cup Review – Round Seven |
April 22 - The Vodacom Blue Bulls ended the 2010 Vodacom Cup as the only undefeated team in the competition following their 40-26 victory over the Griffons in Atteridgeville on Saturday.
The Pretoria side ran in five tries against their Welkom opponents which were scored by Marnitz Boshoff, Deon Helberg, Tiger Mangweni, Stefan Watermeyer and Okkie Kruger. Watermeyer kicked three conversions and a penalty while centre Francois Brummer also slotted two penalty kicks.
The victory ensured that the Vodacom Blue Bulls ended the league phase of the 2010 Vodacom Cup in pole position in the North section. They will now face Vodacom Western Province in one of the four quarter final matches next weekend after the Cape side suffered a 20-12 defeat to the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs in Petrusburg on Saturday.
Flyhalf Louis Strydom scored 15 points for the hosts while the Cheetahs’ Boom Prinsloo was the only try-scorer in this match. WP’s only points came via the boot of scrumhalf Conrad Hoffman who converted three penalties; and fullback Jurgens Visser who kicked a drop goal.
The victory for the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs ensured that they ended the league phase of the South section in third position. The Bloemfontein outfit will take on the Golden Lions, who finished in second place on the North section log following their 51-20 victory over the Welwitschias of Namibia at the Johannesburg Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Earl Rose scored 16 points for the hosts by kicking a drop goal and a penalty while also managing to convert five of the Golden Lions’ seven tries. Those tries were scored by Henno Mentz, Charles Emslie, Justin Wheeler, Wouter Moore, Pieter Engelbrecht, Jacques Lombard and Shandré Frolick.
The Boland Kavaliers ended the league phase of the 2010 Vodacom Cup in first position in the South section after they comprehensively defeated Eastern Province 36-10 on Saturday.
Cornal Hendricks scored a brace of tries for the hosts while Lionel Cornelius, Jeremy Plaatjies and Hyron Thyse were the other Boland players to score five-pointers. Jacquin Jansen kicked four conversions and a penalty. The Kavaliers will face the Platinum Leopards who defeated the Pumas 33-29 in Potchefstroom on Saturday, in one of the 2010 Vodacom Cup quarter finals next weekend.
The Sharks XV booked themselves a home quarter final following their 24-19 victory over the Pampas XVs of Argentina at the Absa Stadium on Friday night. The Durban outfit will take on the defending champions – the GWK Griquas in the other quarter final match scheduled for next weekend.
GWK Griquas recorded their fifth win in the North section after they defeated the Valke 60-12 while the Sharks XVs edged the Pampas XVs 24-19 in Durban.
In the other Vodacom Cup matches played this weekend, the SWD Eagles consigned the Border Bulldogs to their seventh consecutive defeat of the competition after they ran in six tries to defeat heir East London opponents 39-30 on Saturday. Weekend results:
