The South African Women’s team on Thursday began the countdown to the 2010 Rugby World Cup (RWC) in earnest when they attended the first of eight National Training camps in Port Elizabeth.
A group of 35 players gathered in the Eastern Cape city with just seven months to go until the RWC kicks off in England from 20 August to 5 September. Fifteen teams have been drawn into three Pools at the Women’s Rugby World Cup. The SA Women’s team play the defending champions New Zealand, Australia and Wales in Pool A.
“This is the beginning of the second phase of our plan as we continue our preparations for the Women’s World Cup,” said SA Women’s team coach Denver Wannies.
“We concluded our first phase last year following our involvement in the Nations Cup in Canada where many of our players were exposed to international competition. This part of the programme will also see our team compete in international matches to expose more players to top flight rugby.”
The entire first day of the camp has been set aside for medical screening and fitness testing. Wannies and his management team will then use the next three days to expose his players to rugby specific training which will include general skills development.
“We are also going to spend some time analyzing our performances of the Nations Cup in Canada,” said the SA Women’s coach.
“It’s important that our players understand where they fell short in terms of competing against the likes of England, France and the USA. We need our players to understand where we are in terms of our international opposition. That’s why we have also invited some new players to the training squad.
“Our intentions for this year will be to expose and equip as many players as possible to our vision and plan for the new season.”
