With gamebreaking scrumhalf Jano Vermaak joining the Auto and General Lions in Sydney and available for Saturday’s Vodacom Super 14 match against the Waratahs, Dick Muir’s team has received a timely boost.
Whether Muir will start against the Waratahs with the quicksilver player who last season was a strong candidate for international honours has to be seen.
However, without a win despite four good performances in their outings to date, the side needs an injection - and Vermaak could be the man to provide that. He is a top-class player and in addition is one of the senior players and a leader in the side, with captaincy experience for the Lions testimonial of his leadership qualities.
The delay in naming a replacement for Deon van Rensburg who was injured ten days ago against the Hurricanes now makes sense. Muir was obviously waiting for the go-ahead on Vermaak, who returned to action in the Vodacom Cup game for the Lions against the Valke last weekend.
Vodacom Cup wing Wigan Pekeur has also joined up with the Lions after Dusty Noble, in his first match of the season, tore his knee cruciate ligaments. He will be out of action for the rest of the year. Lions flyhalf Carlos Spencer, who missed last weekend’s game with a pectoral muscle injury, will be back this weekend. If he is selected he will play in his 100th Super Rugby match. |
