October 20 - The Lions’ task in the final round of the North Region Sevens Series is simple: win the last tournament in Parys on Saturday and become the 2010 champions.
The Lions go into the final tournament tied with the Pumas on 98 points at the top of the log – and whichever of these two sides wins the tournament will be crowned champion in the series played on the same basis as the IRB Sevens World Series at a number of venues. And so high is the standard of the competition that a combined North region side took part in the recent international Sevens tournament at Bafokeng where they played against the Springboks.
The Lions won last week’s penultimate tournament in Nelspruit that took them to equal top of the table. But despite the win, there are still four sides still in title contention, and the Parys tournament will determine the 2010 champion.
A slip by the Lions or the Pumas this weekend could well see the Valke – on 94 points – or the Leopards (84) sneak in as the title winners. Concievably – with strange mathematecical permutations needed – the Blue Bulls, on 74 points, could even make the title theirs. This scenario is however highly unlikely.
** Lions players Juan Swanepoel, Rory van Deventer and Derich Badenhorst were included in the North Region team selected after the Nelspruit tournament.
** Meanwhile it has been announced that the annual inter-provincial Sevens tournaments (both men and women) have been moved from Port Elizabeth and will again take place at Florida Park in Ravensmead (Tygerberg) on November 5 and 6.
