January 20 – The Golden Lions Rugby Union announced this morning that they will be working in conjunction with the Door of Hope Children’s Mission during 2012.
The Door of Hope Children’s Mission was started in 1999 when the Berea Baptist Church’s Minister and deacons heard of the number of newly born infants that were being abandoned. The Minister realized that the many desperate women and young girls may well have acted differently had there been an alternative available to them. The church made a hole in their wall and a ‘Baby Bin’ was installed allowing for mothers to leave their babies any time day or night. The moment a baby is placed in the ‘bin’, care workers on duty receive an electronic signal alerting them. The baby is taken in and the anonymity of the ‘donor’ is ensured.
News has spread and other babies have been taken in personally by their mothers or through other means such as the police, community members, hospitals or clinics. The ministry has grown to such an extent that hundreds of children’s lives are being saved every year. As of 10 January 2012, 1010 babies have gone through their doors.
The Door of Hope has a few baby houses which are ideal for the temporary purpose for which they were established. However, with the present HIV crisis in South Africa and the overwhelming amount of children affected and infected by AIDS they are always looking to expand and take on more homes. The Door of Hope is permitted to have 54 babies in their care at any one time and is often at the limit.
Over the next few months they aim to install a 2nd ‘Baby Bib’ in Soweto to try and reach the mothers who are abandoning their babies in the area.
The Door of Hope is a faith based organization and rely solely on donations and the generosity of others. Money and items donated to the Door of Hope go towards the continuation of their work, which is to take in orphaned and abandoned children.
