November 9 - The legendary doyen of the former Transvaal Independent Rugby Football Union (Tirfu) Thomas Musson passed away on Monday at the age of 94.
He was a life member of the Golden Lions Rugby Union and was awarded his Golden Lions colours in 2003 together with all other players, administrators and referees that played for Transvaal before unification of the various rugby unions in 1992.
Oom Mannie, as he was known, played for the former “coloured” SA Rugby Union and was also involved with coaching and administration at both Saru and Tirfu.
“He was one of the great men of sport and will be remembered for his dedication and unstinting loyalty,” said Mark Alexander, deputy president of Saru and a man who was coached by Musson.
“We will always honour him and salute him for his love of the game and for a life dedicated to service. He was a giant of the game and we’ll cherish the special memories of Mr Musson and his contribution,” said Alexander.
Those sentiments were echoed by the CEO of the GLRU Manie Reyneke after hearing of his death.
“He was a rugby man to the core, and missed very few of the Lions' matches. Our condolences go out to his wife, Eleanor, as well as his children and family that he leaves behind.”
