BokSmart training programme at the Golden Lions Rugby Union.

Introduction

BokSmart encompasses the “Bok” brand and playing and “Smart’ rugby is safe AND effective rugby. Carrying the flag for this brand comes with a huge responsibility as BokSmart aims to standardise the way these safety principles are implemented across the board via facilitated education. All coaches and referees are furthermore encouraged to apply these principles, and should embrace the main focus of the programme, and that is to keep players safer on the field, grow the game and improve player performance on the field.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union is responsible for the implementation of the BokSmart program within its jurisdiction and shall monitor and control at both matches and practices that the referees and coaches have been BokSmart trained.

Purpose of BokSmart.

We cannot say that there will be no more serious or catastrophic injuries on rugby fields, but our ultimate intentions will be to make the game safer and to reduce the number of serious or catastrophic head, neck and spine injuries associated with the game. One of these injuries is one too many. We can also via the right educational forum improve the way in which these injuries are managed, and where possible can contribute to an improved outcome for the injured players.

Invitation to undergo BokSmart training.

To enable you to embrace the BokSmart philosophy of making the game safer for all participants of the game you are hereby invited to attend a course that will positively change your thinking around the pertinent issues regarding injury prevention, injury management, rugby safety and rugby performance.

Who is to undergo BokSmart training?

The primary aim of BokSmart is to provide rugby coaches and referees with the correct knowledge, skills and leadership abilities to ensure that safety and best practice principles are incorporated into all aspects of contact rugby in South Africa.

Cost of attending and duration of the course.

BokSmart has come about as a result of an exciting partnership between the South African Rugby Union and the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players’ Fund.
Both of these well respected rugby organisations have made a keen investment of time and effort to make rugby safer for all participants. ABSA, one of the biggest sponsors of South African rugby,
has also come on board and is the main sponsor of BokSmart. Without their financial backing and support, a program of this nature would never be possible. Therefore it will not cost you anything to attend the course. The course duration is ±4 to 4, 5 hours.
