GLRU Coaches Association – Registration Open

In 1994 the Golden Lions Rugby Union developed their Coaches Association, and has grown in strength and stature since its humble beginning. The SA Rugby Union (SARU) has since requested that all Unions have a proper Coaches Association in place, and the GLRU are proud that their Association is in place, ready and up to standard with SARU regulations.

The GLRU Coaches Association is responsible for, and handles, everything pertaining to coaching at schools and clubs level.

In order to be a member of the Association, one must register with the Golden Lions Rugby Union. Once registration is complete, members will complete an IRB Level one coaching course. Clubs will decide which of their coaches need to complete further levels of the coaching courses.

Derek Jardine of the GLRU has put together both a Selection Committee and an Evaluation Committee. Derek will be responsible for doing the evaluations of the coaches, so that when a coach is needed at a higher level, Derek is able to provide the Selection Committee with all the relevant information. Coaches thus stand more of a chance of reaching a higher level by being a member of the GLRU Coaches Association.

Aside from this, there are several other perks to joining the Association. Amongst these, members will receive a membership card which allows them a 10% discount at the Coca-Cola Park Team Store on any purchases. Members will also be allowed to attend seminars throughout the year for a cost of just R10. Non-members will pay R120 per seminar.

Another perk is that every year the GLRU send three coaches on very exclusive courses. This year Walter Minnaar, Carl Spilhaus and Bafana Nhleko attended the first Investec International Rugby Academy in South Africa, led by Dick Muir. Throughout 2010, these candidates will hold similar seminars where they will train club coaches, and as a result will be passing their knowledge on to fellow coaches.

The IRB and SARU have also recently announced that all coaches must do the Boksmart programme, and all our coaches are required to complete this programme, which is a further benefit to not only the coaches, but all players as well.

Dr. Willem Boshoff, Chairman of the Assocation, and one of the founding members, along with Arrie Genis – the Treasurer of the Association started the GLRU Coaches Assocation in 1994 and are incredibly passionate about the game of rugby and developing coaches of international standards.

The motto “Back to Basics” has been adopted for 2010, whereby the Association will be concentrating on teaching coaches the basics of playing rugby.

Registration is now open for 2010, and membership is just R220 per person. For further information, or to register for next year, please contact Alida Serfontein on 011 402 2960 x 156 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The GLRU and the GLRU Coaches Association would like to thank Belvon Engineering and William Hunter, owner of Belvon for their sponsorship and invaluable support. Without you we would not be able to grow the association at the rate we currently growing.
