What would you do if your took your five month old baby son for a routine pediatric check up and discovered he had Acute Lyphoblastic Leukaemia? What would you do if your little boy was immediately admitted to hospital and you received the news that his chances of survival were incredibly slim?
What would you do if a month into chemotherapy treatment your son went into renal failure and was again rushed to hospital and put onto dialysis? What would you do if you had to watch helplessly if at just nine months of age your child started having seizures that lasted for up to three hours at a time?
If after chemo your son had not gone into remission and had to undergo a bone marrow transplant which required him to be put into isolation for 100 days while receiving aggressive therapy to kill off his bone marrow, what would you do? How would it feeling watching your child get worse thereafter with his body swelling up to the point that he can no longer see out of his eyes, can’t sit, has fluid filling his lungs, loses his appetite and starts suffering liver damage from all of the medications he’s taking?
What would you do if this was your son? If this was how your baby spent the first year of his life?
This is the reality that Ryan and Linda Carneson face on a daily basis.
Reef Carneson is now almost three years old. He weighs 8.8kg and wears baby clothes for 6 – 12 month old babies. He is incredibly bright and understands everything his parents say to him and he has learnt some sign language. Without the use of Reef’s hands and legs there is very little he can do so he mostly watches DVDs. With the correct treatment it is possible that Reef can recover from his GVHD (Graft Versus Host Disease).
But the treatment is not cheap. And it is not available in South Africa. The Carneson family will be going to the United States of America at the end of October to get the best possible treatment for Reef and to give him a chance at life.
This is where you, our Lions supporters come in – the Carneson’s need to raise R1 000 000.00 within a few days to help their little boy for the deposit before the hospital will begin treatment – and we challenge you to take part in the R28 challenge. If 35 714 people each donate just R28 to Reef, he will be able to start his treatment.
R28 is not a lot of money. Imagine it was your child.
