The Golden Lions Rugby Union hosted a development clinic in Alexandra (north of Johannesburg) on Thursday, 3 September 2009.
Over 100 children (both boys and girls), attended the clinic, along with nine educators from the various schools involved. All the children were aged between 10 and 13 years, and each of the youngsters thoroughly enjoyed the hour of coaching and playing in the sun.
The purpose of the clinic was to develop and encourage young players to participate in rugby and to teach them about the game.
During the clinic, the children were taught ruck formations, handling skills and the basics of the game. The U/21 Xerox Lions squad attended the clinic with their coach, Timmy Goodwin, and assisted the youngsters with sharpening their skills. The U/21 squad enjoyed every minute of the session, possibly even more than the children did, and definitely spotted some future talent on the field.
A follow up clinic will be held in Alexandra in the near future due to the huge success of this clinic.
Lomax Tshandu (Manager of Development), Timmy Goodwin (U/21 Head Coach) and Mzukisi Mpahlwane (North Area Development Coordinator) of the GLRU attended the clinic and were thrilled with the outcome.
”I believe the clinic was a huge success, far beyond our expectations. It was a huge learning curve for both the youngsters and the U/21’s. The organization was outstanding and the young players walked off the field very knowledgeable and prepared”, Mpahlwane said.
