Development Steps Up

The Golden Lions Rugby Union, in conjunction with SA Rugby launched their Projects and Management Plan on 19 August 2009. The projects, put together by the GLRU Development Department, headed by Lomax Tshandu and Cassie Drift is an exciting initiative which is sure to see rugby being built from grassroots level up.

The first project is aimed at getting as many schools as possible to compete in rugby matches and will take place at two distinct levels. Level one is an internal school based programme where the school is divided into “houses” that will play against each other internally. Level two will see the better players being selected to represent the school at a cluster level.

From this league, the cluster will select teams to represent the cluster at District Level, where players will be selected to form part of the GLRU’s Youth Schools Excellence Programme (YSEP).

The second projects will target U/11 and U/14 boys and girls and will take place in the form of mini rugby. School coaches will be tasked with identifying players with the necessary talent to play mini rugby. This is a shortened version of the game and can be played across the field.

For the third project – Club and School Links – seven clubs have been selected for participation in this programme – Eden Park, Soweto, Alexandra, Raiders, Eldoronians, Kagiso and Ennerdale. These clubs will be responsible for ensuring that the programmes in their area are functional, and will be asked to present their respective teams at a tournament to be announced at a later stage.

The fourth, and final project is aimed at getting women to play, officiate and administer the game of rugby. The participation of women at all levels of the game is extremely important to SARU, the GLRU and the government. Separate events will be planed for women only and these players will be chosen from the first and second projects.

The GLRU are incredibly proud of the Development Department for their hard work, dedication and passion in building rugby, and we look forward to some promising and very positive results.
