Referees Recruitment and Courses

May 31 - The Golden Lions Rugby Union launched an intensive recruitment drive and we had our first meeting on Tuesday, 25 May 2010. This meeting was attended by black recruits only. After the meeting 30 people completed the Society Registration form and are now members of the Lions Referees’ Society. A follow up meeting within the next three to four weeks is being planned.

During the first meeting it was explained that refereeing is not a money making business but, a path that people follow for the love of it. The GLRU will find means and ways to retain these referees, and one of the ways planned is through a golf day specifically for Development, but with high profile rugby people participating.

This is only in the planning stage, but some ex players have already indicated their willingness to participate. We are looking at early September.

An Assistant Referee Course for Clubs was also conducted, where coaches completed this course. They will be utilised at club matches, but from 2nd team downwards. The purpose of this is to strengthen the society as well as the clubs and it will increase the GLRU’s referees numbers significantly.

A second course will be planned as demand from the clubs increase.
